Mobile Devices to Outnumber Humans in 2012

The world population hit 7 billion in November 2011 and Worldometers estimated that net population growth is about 77,000 per day. Very soon, human will be outnumbered by mobile devices. Infact, according to network firm Cisco, that would happen this year.

Screen-shot of my laptop display.

Not surprising as the usage of mobile communication gadget is increasing at exponential rate and the personal mobile equipment is flooding the market like a huge wave.

The world is getting smaller and data users will be more and more mobile, no doubt. But those who produce data will still need to chain themselves to a desk in that sense; they will not be that mobile. Plus, in order to handle delicate data, you will need the big screens. Then again, how many of us would be managing such data compared to the mostly 'data consumers' masses?

I don't have a 7-inch tablet yet but I can't imagine doing a decent work on one if I can't do the same on my 3.5 inch 4S screen. At the most I read e-mails, news, and other Internet surfing from it. Replying to e-mails with lengthy wordings is a bit of a struggle too.

That said, let's see what the network company, Cisco said in their report.

Go to Cisco's global mobile data traffic forecast page and you will see a comprehensive Cisco VNI Forecast, their ongoing initiative to track and forecast the impact of visual networking applications on global networks. The forecast presents Cisco's major global mobile data traffic and growth trends. The followings are some of the summary of the long report:

1. The number of mobile devices will exceed the world’s population in 2012
2. There will be over 10 billion mobile connected devices in 2016
3. By 2016 monthly global mobile data traffic will surpass 10 exabytes (1 exabytes = approx. 1 billion gigabytes)
4. As a comparison, Cisco reported that mobile data traffic in 2011 was eight times the size of the global internet data in 2000
5. Global mobile-data traffic will increase eighteenfold between now and 2016
6. Currently the average smartphone uses 150MB of data per month but this is expected to rise to 2.6GB gigabytes by 2016. WELCOME TO THE GIGABYTE CLUB!
7. Mobile-network connection speeds will increase ninefold by 2016
8. Two-thirds of the world’s mobile data traffic will be video by 2016
9. In 2011 there were 34 million tablets and by 2016 tablets are predicted to account for more than 10% of global mobile traffic, out-pacing smartphones by miles.

Samsung Galaxy Ace

Don't mistake the Galaxy Ace for the Galaxy-S as they are pronounced almost similar.

Fiddled briefly with the Galaxy Ace few days ago at Karamunsing Complex and it feels easy on the palm. Size almost as big as the iPhone 3GS but first impression is that the build quality is miles behind the iPhone. If the iPhone's response to the finger flick is like breeze and fast, expect a slower response from this. Of course I should not compare the two as the price and target market are different. Alright, I'm just looking for a simple phone that is decent but not flashy.

This is the latest release and is priced much cheaper. Retailed at RM999.00 but street price could be lower and from my initial survey this week, one can get it for RM980.00 (Release date: Feb 2011).

By comparison, Galaxy-S is retailed at RM2,599 and could be had at RM1900-RM2000 depending on memory size. (Release date Mar 2010). There's already an updated version, Galaxy-S2 coming up and this, I think, should give iPhone 4 a run for the money.

Hope to get hold of one Galaxy Ace next week and come back to give feedback to this posting.

Feedback/Update:
I am using this as a second handset and it is not delivering what's expected - ease of browsing the internet, connecting to WiFi, one-hand typing. It is slow.

After using it for the past 1 year, it seem to have slowed down so much that you basically have to wait for quite a while for it to respond to each click (touch) of a button.

Why I hate The iPhone

.

** Snapshot of Windows Explorer view of the iPhone **

Note the inability to explore Folders and it is not possible to drag-and-drop files. All you see is a single folder containing images taken with the 3MP of camera.

iPhone has been the 'in thing' for much of 2009 and it must've been such a great pride to own one. It has been the pace setter on many fronts and it still is today albeit few 'iPhone killers' appearing one after another.

Why I hate the iPhone? Well, not literlly but that was out of some frustration after using it for sometime. It was rather meant to be 'my wishlist for iPhone' functionality.

Here is why:

1) First and foremost is the iPhone's Storage Connectivity. I can't connect my iPhone to my Laptop/PC and drag-and-drop files onto. Unlike my wife's Samsung Omnia which operates on Windows Mobile.
.2) Data handling. I hope I can save text messages on my iPhone. Should be able to archive an entire thread. I dont want just a copy-and-past enabled gadget that's so expensive. MOre than that please....
.
3)Camera is nothing to shout about. The 3MP camera needs more work to improve. It is too slugish and lagging behind in today's competition.
.
I have a dedicated Compact Camera and DSLR, so i'm not too concerned about the phone cam. But what about storage connectivity? This alone left me wishing for something other than an iPhone.
.
So, dear iPhone, on your next upgrade please open up a bit to the outside world and be friendly to others.

Kota Kinabalu PC Fair 2009

That happened on 3 - 5th April 2009 at Centre Point Sabah(CPS). This one, being outside the PIKOM schedule of event, was themed PC Show 2009 by CPS management. I went there on 4th April and gosh! it was bumper-to-bumper for both outside and inside of CPS. It was awfully difficult to get empty parking bay but once inside the shopping mall, it was all smile and satisfaction; well at least for a PC-fair hunter like me.

I can tell you it was very crowded, you can practically become "glued" to the person in front of you. Best bet a pervert can go for to quench some thirst!

Crowded it was..but I can see you, MU fan with nice black t-shirt. Hehe

"And you, yes you! I can see you", he spotted me taking pic. He should be proud, a lot of lenglui visited his booth. I think.

"We've got everything from big to small. What colour would you like ma'am?"

He was fondly talking to the lady in the laptop's web cam (look at the Laptop) before I came in to "interrupt" them. I was damn jahat ler. He willingly smile for the album tho.

MiSS was the word of the day during the 3-day PC Fair. MiSS stands for Maxprint ink Supply System, claimed to be able to print up to 2000pages before you need to replace the cartridge. That's amazing 2cents per page for black and 6cents per page for colour print. Some booths called it CiSS (Continuous ink Supply System)

There you go, Canon MP145 comes with MiSS costs you only RM239. Just next booth you'll find similar item for RM259. I got myself an All-in-one Printer, Canon MX318 for RM399. Next door you'll find yourself setbacked at RM459. It really pays to take the trouble to visit every booth and get yourself bumped, literally, in the process!

And i got to meet these beautiful people to collect my surprise gifts (a shopping trolley and a sling bag) for buying Canon products. (p/s: the guy isn't me, he is one of the crew manning the Canon service centre)
