World's first Solar-powered bike lane in the Netherlands

Here is some pedal power. You've heard about the idea of solar roadways which has been around for some time, but how about solar bike paths?

That is an idea that the Dutch are already putting into use with the 70-metre SolaRoad, billed as a world's first. RenewableEnergyWorld highlights the €3 million ($3.74 mil) path, which powers street lights and houses and features solar cells under a layer of tempered glass.

70-metre solar path that costs €3 mil (RM13 mil) to build

The surface of the road has been treated with a special non-adhesive coating

If you ask me, I'd say this is not a showcase of energy or resources efficiency, but this is an idea that might bring about some interesting results; we'll see.

An insightful comment from a reader read as follow:
"2000 cyclists over crystalline silicon panels? Let me get this right. Its more or less the same as 2000 leaves of shade over a rooftop panel? Am I right? I think your road's angle is not the only obstacle. Hope you also got some good termo conduction underneath those panels, for my guess is that they will run hotter, further dropping output. You should rather have roofed the pathway with the panels, shade for the cyclists, as well as an umbrella for rain." - PJ Van Staden, REW magazine.

The trees, when fully grown, could reduce the energy production further.

The bike road would be very useful to commuters and school children and could be a cool part of their daily commute. Approximately 2,000 cyclists are expected to use it on an average day.

The road, named by the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO) as SolaRoad, is made up of rows of crystalline silicon solar cells, which were embedded into the concrete of the path and covered with a translucent layer of tempered glass.

Since the path cannot be adjusted to the position of the sun, the panels will generate approximately 30% less energy than those placed on roofs. However, the road is tilted slightly to aid water run-off and achieve a better angle to the sun and its creators expect to generate more energy as the path is extended to 100 metres in 2016.

Revolutionary conferencing system launched in Malaysia

Not too sure if this can be termed 'revolutionary' but one thing is for sure - it's a first in Malaysia.

A couple of weeks ago, Bosch launched a new conference system called DCN Multimedia, which uses Internet Protocol-based OMNEO media networking architecture with touch screen conference devices based on the Android operating system.

In a nutshell, what it does is that it enables superior multimedia/remote conferencing experience - that includes audio, video, meeting content and touch-screen technology in "elegant and ergonomically" designed conference devices.

Bosch upped the ante on multimedia conferencing

Technology systems provider Bosch has launched a new conference system called DCN Multimedia, which uses IP-based OMNEO media networking architecture with touch screen conference devices based on the Android operating system.

DCN Multimedia is the company's latest range of conference systems that once again shows its innovative edge in developing holistic solutions for digital technology in the conference room. It claimed that the system's sound quality, interactive platforms and diverse practicality offers superior technical proficiency to allow effective communication.

The company now offered a range of meeting and conferencing applications and the new DCN system "combined audio, video, meeting content and touch-screen technology in elegant and ergonomically designed conference devices."

The high-resolution, capacitive touch-screens provide users with the information they need literally at their fingertips, allowing participants to share documents, retrieve and display presentations, as well as access the internet.

How about security standards?

Audio and control data transmitted through the system is encrypted in accordance with internationally recognised standards. This means that it is securely protected against tampering and unauthorized access.

The system allows easy expansion with OMNEO audio devices and a wide range of audio products supporting Dante technology. Enhanced functionalities can also be added to the multimedia conference devices via software and integrating third-party or custom-made apps.

Standard and open technologies can be combined with multimedia capabilities for an enhanced meeting experience.

Eco Urinal: Pee and wash in the same stand

The design is cool and I personally like it.

However, not everyone would be comfortable peeing so close to the next guy especially with the mirror angled the way it is. For instance, a tall guy may be able to see 'yours' through the mirror or even through the glass wash basin.

What's cool about this design is that, it saves water. The designer says that when you rinse your hand after the job, the same water can be used to cleanse the urinal basin. It's really handy when space is an issue. But for public toilet, I think the mirror tend to make users stand there longer and the waiting period become longer, too. Not suitable for high traffic toilet.

Urinal, 450x450x200, Ceramic
Patent: 30-0602344

"To save water, Eco Urinal is designed to use the water that was used for washing hands to flush the urine.By this process, we don’t have to use water twice after using the urinal. Moreover, it reduces the establishment expenses by optimizing the materials.Upper space of this urinal is made with glass, and it helps to secure a clear view for users. It also promotes people to keep their sanitation because people need to wash their hands to flush the urine after use."
