Twenty three accident-prone areas in Sabah (Jalan hantu?)

The rising number of commuting accidents on our roads is a very worrying trend.

In 2011, there were 24,809 out of the overall 59,897 commuting accidents in the country reported to SOCSO, for which it paid out compensatory disbursements amounting to RM1.71 billion. That is an increase of 12% from 2010 figure of 22,036 cases (out of the overall 57,639 cases), which cost SOCSO RM1.68 billion in compensation.

Remember this accident involving Shell fuel tanker and a newly acquired train belonging to Sabah Railways in Jalan Kepayan. Photo: extracted from keruak.com

Scene of Train collision800
I took this picture few days after the incident. Sabah Railways is almost done with the cleaning up.

Commuting accident cases is on the uptrend as indicated by this year's January-April statistics (nationwide):
January    : 1,961 cases
February  : 4,106
March      : 6,301
April        : 8,434

In Sabah, there were 111 such cases recorded from January to July this year; most of which took place in March (22 cases) and July (19 cases).

It is time to balik kampung for the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration and motorise are advised to be extra careful along the 23 accident-prone areas throughout Sabah. Some call them as jalan hantu (spooky) for apparent reason. The roads are:

  1. Jalan Tuaran Bypass
  2. Jalan /BeluranTelupid
  3. KM68 Jalan Sandakan/Lahad Datu
  4. KM77  Jalan Sandakan/Lahad Datu
  5. KM90  Jalan Sandakan/Lahad Datu
  6. KM93  Jalan Sandakan/Lahad Datu
  7. KM107  Jalan Sandakan/Lahad Datu
  8. KM121  Jalan Sandakan/Lahad Datu (an express bus accident just happened here last Thursday)
  9. KM124  Jalan Sandakan/Lahad Datu
  10. KM126  Jalan Sandakan/Lahad Datu
  11. KM130  Jalan Sandakan/Lahad Datu
  12. Jalan Kudat/Kota Kinabalu
  13. Jalan Lama Parar/Kota Kinabalu/Beaufort
  14. Jalan Beaufort/Papar
  15. Jalan Beaufort/Menumbok
  16. Jalan Tawau/Kunak
  17. Jalan Lahad Datu/Sandakan
  18. Jalan Kunak/Lahad Datu
  19. Jalan Bulatan Rugading-Serusup/Laya-Laya
  20. Jalan Ranau/Telupid
  21. Jalan Ranau/Tamparuli
  22. Jalan Penampang/Tambunan
  23. Jalan Sipitang/Sindumin

Please observe the 10km/h speed reduction which was implemented nationwide during this year's Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration period. AND DON'T DRIVE ON THE FAST LANE on a dual-carriageway if you are driving slow. That is an offence, just like when you are speeding above the speed limit.

Happy Holiday, happy balik kampung and have a safe journey home.

Sabah International Folklore Festival 2012 - Part I

Prelude to the big international event at Sabah Cultural Centre this weekend.

The 2012 Sabah International Folklore Festival (SIFF) participanting troupes are now in town. The peak of this most anticipated festival is on 14th - 15th July but for the city folks the international troops did some introductory performances on Tuesday at Lintasan Deasoka, or City Square as some call it.

I arrived a little late and by that time the Indonesian folkdance troupe were done with theirs.

Egypt: Elsharkia Folkloric Troupe with their amazing horse dance performance

'Snow white' - mesmerising piece of artistic movement by the troupe from Kazakhstan

Indonesia is represented by dancers from Sanggar Bedewa Kabupaten Nunukan

7th Sabah International Folklore Festival 2012 : Schedule

Also known as Festival Kesenian Rakyat Antarabangsa Sabah, the seventh edition of this international event is currently ongoing. Scheduled to kick of on July 8, but as we drive through the main venue, Sabah Cultural Centre yesterday there was nothing much going on yet.

1. Brunei Darussalam
2. Czech Republic

KK City Folklore Parade (10 July 2012)

The cultural parade is jointly organised by Sabah Cultural Board (SCB) and Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK), and is to be flagged off at Wisma Budaya starting at 1.30pm by SCB Chairman, Datuk Wenses Anggang.

From Wisma Budaya, the parade will proceed to Lintasan Deasoka for 'pocket show' via Jalan Laiman Diki and Jalan Tugu, in front of City Hall. All the participating international troops and local cultural groups are expected to participate in the parade. Only the international troops will perform in Lintasan Deasoka though.

The parade will then proceed through Gaya Street and will end at Kota Kinabalu Community Centre. As such, roads mentioned above will be closed in stages to make way for the troops.

This is actually a very good opportunity for the public and especially photographers to make full coverage of the event. I've done one earlier this year during the Universiti Malaysia Sabah annual parade along the streets of Kota Kinabalu.

Lastly, tickets for the cultural shows are available at:
1. Wisma Budaya Building (088-268836)
2. Sabah Cultural Centre, Penampang (088-715464)

Harvest Festival 2012 begins

The annual event to celebrate bountiful harvest has now been kicked started. The 2012 Harvest Festival launching was in Kuala Penyu in an effort to give all major towns the opportunity to become the host for one of the widely celebrated cultures in Sabah. Last year, 2011 Harvest Festival was kicked-start in a small West Coast town of Tamparuli.

The month-long celebration starts 1st May, 2012 and as usual will be capped with a full 2-day extravaganza at KDCA in Penampang on 30th-31st May 2012. The peak of the celebration is marked with the crowning of the Unduk Ngadau (Harvest Queen) for 2012.

Sabah Fest 2012

.
Welcome to the colourful SABAH FEST 2012.

Image: Sabah Tourism

Sabah Fest is the largest cultural event among the many of Sabah's multicultural attractions and for the first time this year the event will be held at the newly-opened 600-capacity Auditorium, Kompleks JKKN Sabah , Mile 2, Jalan Penampang, Kota Kinabalu from 3rd - 5th May 2012.

What to expect

1) Cultural  extravaganza  which  will  take  place  outside  the  venue to offer visitors a  complete  cultural
    journey:
     a) Handicraft-making demonstrations by local experts
     b) Traditional music shows and dance performances
     c) Sampling of variety of traditional foods

2) The main highlight which will be the cultural performances, showcasing the Adventures of
Ngarayang, a dynamic, smooth-talking barter trader and his irresistible tales on the diverse
West Coast ethnic groups he had encountered throughout his barter trade trips.

Storyline of the Adventure of Ngarayang

The story line is scripted in such a way to showcase the authentic, age-old dances, rituals and ceremonies of the Bonggi of Banggi Island, Dusun Kimaragang of Kota Marudu, the Lotud of Tuaran, the Bajau of Kota Belud, the Bruneian of Southwest Sabah, the Bisaya of Beaufort and the Dusun Tatana of Kuala Penyu.

A young adventurer named Ngarayang meaning ‘trader’ plied the west coast of Sabah bartering and distributing a variety of goods much sought after by the coastal communities. He was gifted with a charming look and a flair for story-telling. He captivated his audience wherever he went with wonderous stories of his travels and tales of cultures he encountered.

On one of his legendary journeys, the charms of a beautiful princess captured his heart, and while tales of mystical rituals, captivating dances and mesmerising music in a land of exotic people and cultures fascinated him, his heart yearned to see his princess again.

To find out what happened to Ngarayang in the end, come and find out for yourself.

Traditional dances and rituals

The followings are scheduled to be showcased beginning 8.30pm  by about 400 local performers from their respective areas, during the cultural extravaganza:

1) The Bonggi with their Adat Bebalang and Tabadak dances,
2) The Dusun Kimaragang with their Pinakang dance,
3) The Lotud donning the Sampangan cloth in their colourful and elaborate wedding ceremonies,
4) The Sama (Bajau) with their Runsai Cagayan,
5) The Dusun Menggatal Kuntau (martial arts),
6) The Brunei Zapin Jamilah,
7) The Bisaya Liliput dance and Bubu Mengalai ritual,
8) The Dusun Tatana Bakanjar (martial arts) integrated with the Moginum (drinking) ritual and dance called Sayau Loyop.

If you've noticed, these ethnic groups reside in the West Coast of Sabah.

Similar to the Sabah Fest 2011 at Sutera Magellan, there will be no entrance fee for visitors visiting the exhibitors booths. For the main show, tickets are priced at RM30 and RM50 per show. The building is said to be conforming to the green building guidelines, so, let's visit the new National Culture and Arts Department auditorium this May.

Happy Chinese New Year!

Chinese months are reckoned by the lunar calendar, with each month beginning on the darkest day. New Year festivities traditionally start on the first day of the month and continue until the fifteenth, when the moon is brightest. Chinese New Year is the longest and most important celebration in the Chinese calendar.

The Chinese year 4710 begins on Jan. 23, 2012. [quote: infoplease.com]

Let's start this short week by wishing everyone around the globe a happy happy happy new year. May you have good fortune and good health this year.

Sabah Fest 2011

Sabah Fest 2011 merupakan acara kebudayaan terbesar Sabah yang memaparkan kisah rakyat mengenai tujuh bersaudara bertajuk "Papakang: The Odyssey of Seven Brothers".

This Time For TAMPARULI

unduk ngadau2010-800a
This year's month long Karamayan Kaamatan (Harvest Festival) will kick off in a small West Coast town of Tamparuli. For several years now the month of May has been officially declared as the State's Harvest Festival celebration month. The beating of gong to commemorate the traditional festival will be on 1st May 2011 at Dewan Tun Hamdan, Tamparuli.

Note: Unless otherwise specified, all pictures in this article were taken by the author himself.

Related opening ceremony which happened on 1st May 2009 in Papar can be viewed here.

So, lets throng Tamparuli this Sunday and get to witness first hand, not just the celebration but the taste of foods you wouldn't find elsewhere, the culture and especially the warm welcome and friendship you will feel as you walk among the folks.

Let's revisit some of the images I personally captured about Tamparuli:
