Malaysia is number 1 for mobile Internet access

This would give you an indication of mobile device usage in this country.

A study conducted by TNS which includes more than 150,000 interviews across 56 countries on consumers' online behaviour shows that Malaysia is 1 out of only 5 places in the world where smartphone usage has outstripped computers.

The 5 countries where smartphone usage has outstripped computers are:

The study found that in Malaysia, 35% of the users surveyed said that they exclusively use their smartphones and no other device to access the Internet, making Malaysia the #1 country in the world when it comes to smartphone Internet access exclusivity.

The same high smartphone adoption pattern stretched across the rest of the Asia Pacific region with many of the countries above the 50% adoption mark. Even countries that traditionally have lagged behind have registered significant growth like Vietnam at 36%, up 16 percent from 2013.

Apart from Malaysia, the only smartphone-only Internet access was true for other Asian countries:

Vietnam: 24%
Singapore: 16%
South Korea: 14%
Hong Kong: 14%

In the Western world this trend is a single-digit one, e.g. Germany is at 7%, and the UK at 6%.

Search engines

Using search engines on smartphones is ubiquitous. 72% of Malaysians do this at least once a month, and the figures are even higher in the rest of Asia  - Singapore: 88%, Vietnam: 92%, Korea: 99%, Japan: 91%. This is a global trend with the UK, France and Germany all reporting figures of 88%.

On internet penetration

Malaysians have at least 1.2 Internet-enabled devices, which underlines the importance of the multi-screen trend: using more than one device to achieve a task, or using devices simultaneously.

"This research clearly shows that Asian consumers have taken charge of the internet, and are shaping it in their own image - Malaysians are at the forefront of this trend, using their mobile devices to access news, look for local businesses and watch videos." - Sajith Sivanandan, MD, Google Malaysia.

Malaysia healthcare system is third best in the world

This is something nice to read from a foreign publication.

A US magazine, International Living rated Malaysia's healthcare system as the third best out of 24 countries in its 2014 Global Retirement Index. It also mentioned that Malaysia is Asia's best place to retire. Go ahead, read it!

This prompted our prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to tweet saying Malaysia should be proud as its healthcare system is one of the best in the world.

PM Najib: "Malaysia scores third best out of 24 countries in International Living's Annual Global Retirement Index 2014. We should be proud!"

Malaysia ranked third in 2014

A study by the American publication, International Living, rates Malaysia's healthcare system as the third best out of 24 countries in its 2014 Global Retirement Index, beating Spain, Italy, Ireland and New Zealand, among other countries.

Malaysia was listed as third place after it scored 95 out of a possible 100 points. The top two countries, France and Uruguay, scored 97 and 96 points respectively.

The index, which was recently released by the Baltimore-based magazine, praised Malaysia's healthcare as the medical expertise of Malaysian healthcare practitioners is equal to or better than what it is in most Western countries.

"It's a bargain"

In its previous publication, International Living provided the following infographic to compare the Healthcare Costs in 7  Top Oversea Havens. Really, compared to other places with similarly world-class equipment, medical care in Malaysia is "a bargain" as some expats described it.

Malaysia targets to achieve 11% Renewal Energy usage by 2020

By 2020, we are targeting to achieve high income nation status.

And by 2020, for every 10 units of energy that we used, 1 unit must come from renewable sources such as solar, wind, biogas, geothermal, biomass, etc. 11% is about okay? I think, with some 'help' from the fossil fuel sector, we can achieve more than that; a 15% should be more like it.

11 percent Renewable Energy usage

Malaysian Energy, Green Technology and Water Ministry recently unveiled its target of achieving 11% renewable energy usage by individual consumers and the industrial sector by 2020.

Currently the ministry estimates the usage of renewable energy generated by solar, biogas and biomass in the country to be 1.5% and hoped this percentage could be increased every year.

To purchase solar panels and install the system, consumers can apply for loans at the participating banks and the government will bear 2% of the loan interest. This is according to the ministry's deputy minister, Mahdzir Khalid.

To date the country had used only 862.4 megawatts (MW) of the renewable energy, not including hydropower which contributed 3,281MW.

The implementation of the Feed-in Tariff (FiT) system in December 2012 saw demand from the community, that is, 2,760 applications received for the production of renewable energy with a quota of 536MW.

To increase the level of effectiveness and efficiency of the FiT system, the ministry plans to introduce other mechanisms including more competitive bidding and renewable portfolio standard.

TheGreenMechanics:

Regarding this 'more competitive bidding' thing.

During one of the New Electricity Tariff Roadshows by SESB which was attended by SEDA recently, I asked what sort of mechanism SEDA is applying to acknowledge the interest of bidders who are un-successful in their bid but keep bidding. Aren't they supposed to be getting some 'priority' now when the next RE quota become available?

The presenter, a CCO at SEDA answered that, it is an interesting question; they recognised it and they are working around the issue so that genuine bidders will eventually get their quota.

I hope so.

Malaysia launched $100mil (RM320 mil) green fund for South East Asia

Malaysia and Japan-based Asian Energy Investments Pte Ltd (AEI) have launched a US$100 million venture capital fund to invest in clean energy projects in South East Asia.

Malaysia-Japan partnership in venture capital fund raising

Green bank for South East Asia

Focusing on investments in small-to-mid-sized technologies and enterprises, a management company to be established called Putra Eco Ventures, will channel the investments and provide business consultancy services to green technology companies - such as wind, solar or tidal energy.

The announcement comes a little over a week after New York City launched its own US$1 billion green bank and in the wake of the new Australian government's decision to scrap its own green bank, the US$2 billion-a-year Clean Energy Finance Corporation.

Malaysia's Prime Minister Najib Razak announced the launch of the fund on Monday at a meeting of sustainable development experts in San Francisco in the United States.

It will also help find cheaper biodiesel feedstocks for Malaysian biodiesel plants which have been idled because they rely on expensive crude palm oil.

This we hope, will further transform Malaysia into a knowledge-based, innovation-driven economy that is environmentally friendly while aiming to join the ranks of developed nations.

Malaysia aims to reduce its carbon emissions by 40% by 2020 from 2005 levels and increase its renewable energy capacity to 4,000 MW by 2030.

TheGreenMechanics: More options  should now be available for the small and medium-sized enterprises to venture into sustainable energy business.
