Sarawak Ministers & Reps increase own pay three-fold

Seen as appropriate, Sarawak ministers and assemblymen will get an astronomical pay hike of 200% with the approval of the Remuneration, Pension and Gratuities Bill 2013.

With the last revision being in 1992, the Reps salary increment of three-fold is about 9.5% annually, which is still very high. But they are backdating this to Jan 1, 2012, so effectively it is 10%,

Okay, Sabah maybe looking at doing the same and it won't be too surprising anymore now, would it?

Sarawak ministers, assemblymen get three-fold pay hike

The state’s ministers and assemblymen have approved a whopping 200 per cent raise for themselves and administrators of the state assembly on May 21.

Under the new remuneration scheme, the chief minister’s salary will increase from the present RM13,000 to RM39,000 per month while the pay of the deputy chief ministers jumps to RM35,000 from the current RM11,500. Senior ministers will receive RM30,000 in monthly salary from the present RM9,000, while ministers will see an increment from RM9,000 to RM27,000. The salary of assistant ministers rises from RM7,000 to RM21,000.

The basic allowance for the members of the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) will increase from RM4,500 to RM15,000 while political secretaries will see an increase in allowance from RM3,000 to RM9,000.

In addition, DUN speaker will receive a salary increase equal to the senior minister while the deputy speaker will be on par with the assistant minister.

The new remuneration scheme, which will be back dated to January 1, 2012, was implemented after the Members of Administration and Members of Dewan Undangan Negeri (Remuneration, Pension and Gratuities) Bill, 2013 was passed without any objection at the DUN sitting here yesterday.

The new pay and allowances will increase the wage bill for the state assembly to RM17 million annually. Second Finance Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh who tabled the bill said the new ordinance seeks to repeal the Members of Administration and Members of Dewan Undangan Negeri (Remuneration, Pension and Gratuities) Ordinance 1980 which came into force on July 1, 1980.

“The need to revise and amend the current amount, rates and terms and conditions of the monthly allowance, salary and such other allowances and benefits is to commensurate with their status and responsibilities in the society, having regard to the current rate of inflation, standard of living and other relevant factors,”Datuk Sri Wong Soon Koh, Second Finance Minister.

'The Vase' - The Harvest Festival has always been associated with a traditional liquor, the Tapai, which is normally stored in a vase such as this one. But personally, i feel getting overly drunk during this time is not necessary.

Frequently asked questions about Solar PV System

Let's get back to basic.

The followings are some of the most commonly asked questions about Solar PV System. People's awareness have slightly increased since the implementation of the FiT mechanism in 2011.

Q: What is a Solar Photovoltaic System (PV system) about?

A: Photovoltaic systems (PV system) use PV module to convert sunlight into electricity. A PV system is made up of different components other than PV modules. These include an inverter for a utility-grid-connected system and when alternating current (AC) rather than direct current (DC) is required; wiring; and mounting structure.

Q: Benefits of Renewable Energy

A: Renewable energy sources are clean and inexhaustible. And as the name tells us it is renewable and does not use resources that can never be replaced. Hence, Renewable Energy has a much lower environmental impact than conventional sources of energy.

Q: How long do photovoltaic (PV) systems last?

A: Basically, PV systems are designed, installed, and maintained to operate for more than 20 years. The basic PV module (interconnected, enclosed panel of PV cells) has no moving parts and typically has lifespan of 25 years above.

Q:How do I know if I have enough sunlight for PV?

A: A photovoltaic (PV) system needs unobstructed access to the sun's rays for most of the daytime. Shading on the system can significantly reduce energy output. Hence, visual assessment on the building is needed to determine if the location is suitable for installation.

Q: What is Feed in tariff and when was it implemented?

A: Malaysia's Renewable Energy Act 2010 came into effect on 1st December 2011.

Feed-in-Tariff (FiT) is a policy mechanism designed to accelerate investment in technologies by allowing eligible Renewable Electricity Generator selling back the generated electricity they produced to the TNB/SESB at higher tariff rate.

Q: How Feed in tariff (FiT) can benefit citizens of Malaysia?

A: Its implementation allows individuals to earn income by selling electricity generated from renewable resources at home. Under the RE Act, the public will be able to sell electricity generated from RE to utility companies such as TNB at higher tariff rate (from RM1.20/kWh and above) for a contract period of 21 years with TNB.

Q: What is the payback of the system?

A: A system producing 5kWp of electricity at home will generate electricity of more than 15 units (15 kWh) per day converted to earning more than RM600 a month through selling back of generated electricity to TNB. Payback for the total system cost and maintenance will be less than 10 years (quoting Green Innotech S/B).

Q: What are the application of PV system?

A:PV system is best suited on most of landed residence. It can be installed on roof top of landed residence, commercial building such as shop lots and office, factory, and petrol station etc.

Q: How big a solar energy system do I need?

A: The size of solar system needed depends on several factors such as

• how much electricity you use, 
• the size of your roof, and
• how much you're willing to invest.

For my hobby in photography, I'd love to have this 'supercapacitor' to recharge my Speedlight in two minutes. Right now my Nikon flashlight batteries recharge in about an hour.

Teenager outsmarts Silicon Valley!

A tiny device that can recharge cell phone batteries in as little as 30 seconds won 18-year-old Eesha Khare a major science award that will help fund her college education at Harvard University.

Khare traveled from her California home to Phoenix for the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, where her invention was honored as one of two winners of Young Scientist Awards.

"I'm in a daze. I can't believe this happened," Khare, a senior at Lynbrook High School in Saratoga, told CNN affiliate, KPIX 5.

Khare's device, a black, rectangular type of supercapacitor just over an inch long, can charge a cell phone battery in 20 to 30 seconds, she said.

"I developed a new supercapacitor, which is basically an energy storage device which can hold a lot of energy in a small amount of volume," she told KPIX 5. The technology may also be able to speed up charging of automobile batteries, she said.

The award includes a $50,000 prize that will come in handy when Khare heads to Harvard in the fall, she told KPIX 5. With a laugh, she predicted that "I will be setting the world on fire."

In announcing the winners of what it billed as the "world's largest high school research competition," Intel cited Khare for recognizing "the crucial need for energy-efficient storage devices" as the world rapidly adopts portable electronics.

More than 1,500 young scientists from around the world were chosen to compete in last week's fair.

Why doesn't lightning travel in a straight line

In the past, I have few attempts at shooting the lightning as it happen and none of my shots are decent enough, but one thing I observed is that lightning does not travel in a straight line.

First, how lightning is formed

The zig-zagging path of lightning has its origin in processes still not fully understood. It begins with strong rising currents of air creating a static electric charge through frictional effects somewhat like those on the surface of balloons rubbed on suitable fabric. Recall the Van der Graaff effect?

This charge generates an electric field that accelerates any free electrons in the surrounding air, smashing them into neighbouring molecules, thus releasing yet more electrons.


. . . and the zig-zag?

If sufficiently violent, these collisions will turn the air under the cloud (see pic above) from electrically insulating to conducting, which allows the passage of electrical current. This heats up the air to around 30,000^oC, triggering the characteristic flash light that follows the zig-zag path formed by the collisions.

The heat also causes a sudden expansion of the air, which we hear as a clap of thunder. The thunder 'loudness' corresponds with the amount of electrical current passing through the air.

In short: Molecules and electrons collisions are in random directions, so the lightning flash you see in the sky is not in a straight line, too.

Solar PV quota of over 9 MW fully allocated within 15 minutes after quota re-opens

Last week, SEDA Malaysia released PV quota of 9MW from previously submitted applications made on 2^nd April 2013 which were unsuccessful.

Summary:

Total quota                        : 9 MW
Total allocated                  : 15.2046 MW
Reason for 'over allocation'    : Previously unsuccessful, & many applicant applied for larger PV capacities

Quota opened                    : 23^rd May 2013, noon
Quota fully allocated         : Within 15 minutes after opening
Total no. of applications    : 70
Application success rate    : Slightly over 50% (that's a very high failure rate!)


Note: The high number of rejection of application (unsuccessful applicant) is due to poor submission quality. In other words, online applications submitted without fulfilling the requirement by SEDA.

The Green Mechanics:
It is hoped that SEDA Malaysia will conduct more trainings, workshops, and briefing on the potentials of Solar PV and the procedure for correct submissions. SEDA must conduct these free-of-charge and not collecting fees.

There should be fund allocation for 'marketing the idea', training, nationwide campaign and awareness, and other promotional activities. That is why there is 1% levy on heavy energy users.

FEED-IN TARIFF: SEDA MALAYSIA RELEASED SOLAR PHOTOVOLTAIC QUOTA OF PREVIOUSLY UNSUCCESSFUL APPLICATIONS

Putrajaya, Thursday (23rd May 2013): The Sustainable Energy Development Authority Malaysia (SEDA Malaysia) today at 12 noon released just over 9 MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) quota. This quota was from previously submitted solar PV feed-in approval (FiA) applications made on the 2nd April 2013 which were unsuccessful. The 9 MW quota was fully allocated within 15 minutes after opening of quota.

Although a series of workshop had been organized to brief the PV service providers and potential PV investors, Puan Badriyah noted that the submission quality was rather poor resulting in nearly 50% unsuccessful applications.

According to the CEO of SEDA Malaysia, Puan Badriyah Abdul Malek, the total number of applicants for this opening of solar PV quota was 70 and the total capacity allocated was 15.2046 MW.

“The seemingly additional capacity from 9 MW to 15.2046 MW was because most applicants apply for larger PV capacities which had lower FiT rates and some were ground-mounted applications meaning a lower FiT rate because bonus rates for building applications would not be applicable,” said Badriyah.

“We hope this time round, the PV service providers and their clients would be more vigilant in providing quality submissions with full compliance to the requirements,” said Badriyah. After all, it is SEDA Malaysia’s vision to see renewable energy grow in meaningful scale and Renewable Energy (RE) Fund is expended in impactful ways.

The RE Fund was established through the enforcement of the Renewable Energy Act 2011 and is an important part of the FiT mechanism approved by the Government to spear head the growth of the renewable energy in the country.

The main function of the RE Fund is to pay the tariff for electricity generated from renewable sources by renewable energy producers and individuals under the FiT mechanism. It is established from the collection of 1% additional charge on all electricity consumers effective since 1st December 2011 although domestic consumers that have electricity bills of not more than RM77 (or consumed not more than 300 kWh) per month will be exempted from contributing to the RE Fund.

The fund is managed and administered by SEDA Malaysia. On this note, the CEO of SEDA Malaysia assures that the fund is managed with prudence, integrity, transparency, and full accountability. These are the core values embraced by SEDA Malaysia.

Yanmar Kota Kinabalu R&D - a boost for Renewable and Alternative Energies

The bold move by Yanmar in setting up a Research and Development centre in Kota Kinabalu is commendable.

Other renewable-energy-inclined companies should emulate such noble cause, but, of course the state government would need to facilitate it by making the policies business-friendly. Yanmar's initiative is timely as Sabah is one of the major producer of CPO in Malaysia and this deserve more effort to unearth the potential of bio-diesel.

Yanmar's capital investment of RM17 million for new engine testing building

Yanmar Kota Kinabalu Research and Development Centre has increased its capital investment to RM17 million for its new engine testing building.

The building with four test benches for performance and durability tests was in line with the corporate mission to provide "sustainable solutions for needs essential to human life for our tomorrow."

In conjunction with the launching, the company also celebrated its 5th year business anniversary in Sabah. The celebrations were launched by the Kota Kinabalu Mayor Datuk Abidin Madingkir here on 17 May.

The centre, located on a 1.31-hectare site at the Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park, is currently focusing on diesel engines based on the next generation fuel technologies such as biodiesel fuel and alternative energies.

The purpose of this new technology is to diversify the company's biodiesel fuel research for the reduction of greenhouse gas towards a better environment.

The centre also has a complete facility for chemical analysis for fuel in compliance with the European standard and the American Society for Testing and Material (ASTM) standard. The ASTM is a non-profit organisation.

New Chevrolet Spark electric car to cost 38% less than sibling Volt

This is a welcomed piece of news for Electric Vehicle fans and tree huggers.

In a move to make electric cars more affordable to the masses, GM came out with a relatively cheap Chevrolet Spark costing as low as $19,995 or RM60,675 when converted dollar-to-dollar.

The recently launched electric car, Mitsubishi i-MiEV cost Malaysian consumers RM139,888 to own one! Chevrolet is quite aggressive in the local market and the Chevy Spark is expected to land on our shore at a later date. But a price tag of twice of those that in the US - say RM121,350 - would be ridiculously expensive.

GM Chevy Spark electric car's price 38 percent less than sibling hybrid Volt's

DETROIT, May 23 — The Chevrolet Spark all-electric subcompact car will cost US buyers as much as 38 per cent less than what it takes to buy its larger sibling, the hybrid Volt, General Motors Co said today.

The 2014 Spark EV, which goes on sale next month in California and Oregon, will sell for as low as US$19,995 after accounting for the full federal tax credit of US$7,500, GM said. The larger Chevy Volt, which was introduced in the fall of 2010, sells for about US$32,500 after the tax credit.

“The Chevrolet Spark EV is the most efficient — and now one of the most affordable — EVs you can buy,” Chris Perry, GM’s vice-president of Chevrolet marketing, said in a statement.

GM has made rolling out cars with electrical technology — including its eAssist system that boosts fuel efficiency in gasoline-powered cars — as a central part of its global strategy.

The US automaker is aiming by 2017 to build up to 500,000 vehicles a year that include some form of electric engine power, including cars like the Spark EV, the Volt and those with eAssist.

Dealing with dog’s increased barking

Citronella is a fragrant natural oil used as an insect repellent and in perfume and soap manufacture. This oil is obtained from South Asian grass, Cymbopogon nardus. But to use it to stop dogs from barking is news to me.

I saw this on the Boston Herald and I thought dog owners might be interested:-

Dear Dr. John,

My 6-year-old Vizsla has always been a bit of a barking dog, but recently her barking at people seems to have increased. She is perfectly healthy and is seen regularly by our veterinarian. She has lots of energy and we take her wherever we go.

We are renting a cottage for two weeks this summer near the beach, and we are concerned about her barking at the rental property.

As such, and because of the recent increased barking, I did some research and purchased a citronella anti-bark collar. The first time I put it on she quieted down probably because she has previously worn an invisible-fence collar. When she barked it did not work and we realized we did not turn it on. We corrected our mistake, and the next time she barked she got a blast of citronella and freaked out. Then she sulked around until we took the collar off.

Are there other options for us besides what we are using, and will she get used to the blast from the collar when she barks? Thanks.— M.S. (Sunday, May 19, 2013)



Dear M.S.,

I do not have a good explanation for dogs sometimes barking more as they get older other than they sometimes get a little more ornery with age. In some breeds there can be genetic predispositions to increased aggression as they age. but that would be entirely different.

As for your other options, you are simply left with allowing her to continue barking and letting consequences be what they may, getting a shock collar, which I would not advocate, or working on training with a behaviorist and keeping your dog engaged in a way that she is preoccupied and thereby not inclined to bark.

However, the citronella collar that you are using is doing its job. The dog is supposed to be startled when barking and find the spray offensive. The spray that is emitted is triggered by electronic sensing of vibrations in the dog’s neck. You don’t want your dog to get used to the blast from the collar or it will not work, but one or two corrective episodes by the collar will probably effectively curb the barking behavior. If you are concerned about her quieting down or sulking, then use the collar only when needed and let her go without the rest of the time. The choice is up to you.

SolarCity gets $500mil financing from Goldman Sachs for Solar Leasing

The amount of financing demonstrates that Financial Institutions have confidence in solar power as a viable business venture.

This initiative by SolarCity:-

• $500 million in financing (approx. RM1.5 billion)
• 110 MW of solar power generated,
• Largest single financing agreement for rooftops in the US, so far
• Little or no up-front cost for homeowners and businesses who invest in the system

SolarCity is getting more than $500 million in financing to develop and implement solar roof systems in the United States. Similar solar 'leasing' on rooftops was mooted in Australia last year.

SolarCity scores $500 million in financing

SolarCity Corp. (SCTY), a solar-energy developer chaired by billionaire Elon Musk, won financing from Goldman Sachs (GS) Group Inc. for more than $500 million in rooftop solar systems that the company will complete this year.

The lease-financing agreement will help SolarCity build about 110 megawatts of solar power systems with little or no up-front cost for homeowners and businesses, San Mateo, California-based SolarCity said today in a statement.

The deal is the largest single financing agreement for rooftop systems in the U.S. and will raise awareness of the quality of the solar-lease asset class, SolarCity Chief Executive Officer Lyndon Rive said in a telephone interview.

“We hope it sends a signal that solar is a stable and reliable asset to invest in,” Rive said in an interview. “These aren’t luxury yachts we’re talking about, it’s your energy, and the default rates are lower than mortgages.”

During the first quarter, SolarCity said it invested $138.2 million in solar systems as demand for rooftop panels from homeowners and businesses surged.

For New York-based Goldman Sachs, the SolarCity agreement will help reach the Wall Street bank’s goal of financing $40 billion in renewable energy during the next decade, said Stuart Bernstein, global head of clean technology.

“SolarCity’s range of distributed solar solutions targeting a wider customer base will help us move toward a low carbon energy future,” Bernstein said in the statement.

Malaysia sixth most vulnerable

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is the sixth most vulnerable country in the world to cyber crime, in the form of malware attacks through the computer or smartphone.

CyberSecurity Malaysia Research vice president Lt Col (R) Sazali Sukardi said the Sophos Security Threat Report 2013 found, in a period of three months this year, that besides Malaysia, nine others - Hong Kong, Taiwan, United Arab Emirates, Mexico, India, the Philippines, Thailand, China and Indonesia - were also highly at risk.

"Cyber thieves have stolen about RM331.7bil worldwide, at an average of RM593 per victim based on the Norton Cyber Crime Report 2012," he said, while presenting a working paper entitled "Collaboration and cooperation in the fight against cyber crime" at a two-day e-Crime conference, here, Thursday.

However, cyber crime in the country decreased from 15,218 cases in 2011 to 9,986 cases in 2012, he said.

He attributed the drop to effective enforcement by the government enforcement agencies, including CyberSecurity.

According to Sazali, the highest reported cyber crime was fraud, followed by cyber invasion attempts, spam, denial of service, content-related offences, malicious code and cyber defamation.

"We are also facing security threats from international criminal organisations that abuse the internet for various cross-border illegal activities such as drugs, human trafficking, financial fraud and money laundering," he said.

He urged the public to contact CyberSecurity at its helpline Cyber999 through 03-89926969 to provide information or lodge a public complaint. - Bernama

If you plan to travel abroad, it's wise to skip the pressure cooker.

Sound weird huh? But you'll be in a lot of of trouble if you travel to the US with one packed in your luggage because pressure cooker is now considered a dangerous weapon. Two pressure cookers were used in last month's Boston Marathon bombing.

Seriously though, who would want to take all the trouble to bring that bulky cooker in his suitcase and trouble to the States? Don't they have one there. If you intend to bring one, that can only mean you are planning to stay there for sometime. Why not just buy one?

Saudi man traveling with pressure cooker arrested

A Saudi man was arrested at Detroit Metropolitan Airport after federal agents said he lied about why he was traveling with a pressure cooker, but his nephew said Monday that it was all a misunderstanding about a device he simply wanted for cooking.

Two pressure cookers were used in last month's Boston Marathon bombings.

Hussain Al Khawahir was being held in Detroit on allegations of lying to Customs and Border Protection agents and of using a passport with a missing page. He was arrested Saturday.

His nephew, Nasser Almarzooq, told The Associated Press that he had asked his uncle to bring him the pressure cooker so he could make lamb. The college student said two pressure cookers he bought in the U.S. were "not good at all," and said the ones available in Saudi Arabia are higher quality.

Almarzooq said his uncle was coming to visit him for a couple weeks.

A criminal complaint alleges that Al Khawahir arrived at the airport Saturday on a flight from Saudi Arabia via Amsterdam, and that he told agents he was visiting his nephew.

He originally said he brought the pressure cooker with him because pressure cookers aren't sold in America, then later said his nephew had bought one but it "was cheap" and broke after one use, according to the complaint.

Agents said they also noticed a page was missing from Al Khawahir's passport from Saudi Arabia. He told them he didn't how it had been removed, and said the document had been locked in a box that only he, his wife and three children have access to in his home, according to the complaint.

Malaysia's Hytex to develop wind farm with China’s Gezhouba

Better known as garment manufacturer in Malaysia, Hytex is making its maiden foray into energy generation. Renewable energy to be specific.

Report says that is has signed  a memorandum of understanding to develop and build a wind farm in Guizhou Province, China:

Cost                               : ¥500 million (RM245 million)

TheGreenMechanics: Too bad, the wind condition in Malaysia does not permit large scale wind farming. Perhaps, when  technology permits low wind speed to turn large wind turbines, then we'll see different scenario in the local wind energy sector.


Hytex to develop wind farm in China

PETALING JAYA: Hytex Integrated Bhd is collaborating with China's Gezhouba Group Electric Power Co Ltd to develop a 500 million yuan maglev wind farm in Guizhou Province, China.

In a statement, Hytex said Gezhouba had been appointed as turnkey contractor to develop the wind farm on a build-and-transfer basis for Hytex, and it expected a final agreement to be concluded with Gezhouba in the second quarter.

The MoU was signed via Hytex's unit, Hytex Integrated (Suzhou) Co Ltd (HIS), with Gezhouba. Gezhouba is a unit of China Gezhouba Group, a Hubei-based construction and engineering company which was the main contractor of the Three Gorges Project.

“The 50MW Guizhou maglev wind farm project will cost an estimated 500 million yuan to develop and build. Upon completion, it is expected to produce more than 200GW of electricity annually for the China Southern Grid in Taijiang county which has a population of more than 60 million people,” it said.

Work on the project is expected to begin in October and will be completed by October 2015. It would be based on a projected concession period of 30 years with an option extension of 20 years.

Meanwhile, HIS and its green technology partner, Shenzhen Timar Scenery Energy Technology Co Ltd (STSET), will fabricate and supply the maglev wind turbines and other equipment required.

“HIS and STSET will also provide the technical skills and expertise required to develop and build this renewable energy facility.

HIS teamed up with STSET earlier in February under a joint venture wind farm agreement to develop a wind farm project.

SEDA Malaysia clarifies on 1% surcharge in electricity bills

Lately, people have been talking in the negative tones and putting the 1% levy on electricity bills in a bad light.

The social media talked about this surcharge as 'an increase in the electricity bills' that is inevitable as the government is looking to recover some of its expenses in the run up to the election. This is NOT TRUE.

I have been following the FiT Scheme development in Malaysia and the 1% surcharge is imposed only on consumers consuming higher-than-average energy - as a rough guideline, consumers with monthly bill of RM77 and above.


This is what SEDA Malaysia has to say:

KUALA LUMPUR, May 2 (Bernama) -- The Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) Malaysia has clarified that the one per cent surcharge in electricity bills is a contribution towards the Renewable Energy (RE) Fund for the Feed-in Tariff (FiT) mechanism, which commenced on Dec 1, 2011.

SEDA Malaysia today issued a statement to clarify the purpose of the surcharge imposed by Tenaga Nasional Bhd in its electricity bills to consumers.

Chief Executive Officer Badriyah Abdul Malek said: "This clarification is necessary because we noticed that the surcharge has become an issue in the online social network over the past few weeks.

"The main function of the RE Fund is to pay the tariff for the electricity generated from renewable sources by renewable energy producers and individuals under the FiT mechanism, which is managed and administered by SEDA Malaysia," she said.

The fund, established through the enforcement of the Renewable Energy Act 2011, is an important part of the FiT mechanism to spearhead the growth of renewable energy in the country.

The public is urged to seek clarification with SEDA Malaysia on any questions regarding the one per cent surcharge.

Battle of the Currents: Is AC better than DC?

A somewhat strange question, isn't it?

If you ask someone in the plywood and wood veneer or paper industry, you would probably hear a lot more  about direct current (DC) applications than those in other sectors. If you are in water production, almost all of your pumps would be driven by induction motors powered by alternating current (AC).

So which system or technology is better?

Two of the pioneers in electrical engineering field have different preference: Thomas Edison is advocating DC and Nikola Tesla on AC. We continue to argue and these gentlemen would have been proud of that long legacy, and the fact that we are still caught in the loop of disagreement.

A global leader in both AC and DC technologies, Asea Brown Boveri (ABB), takes a look at pitting these two from the perspective of modern technology, the Data Centres:
(ABB says it didn't take side)

1) DC is more efficient than AC: DC proponents claim 25-30% efficiency improvement, AC advocates counter with data that implies marginal if any differences in power supply efficiencies.
The fact is, if you compare a state-of-the-art AC power supply with a similarly advanced DC power supply, the efficiency improvements for DC are indeed only in the range of 2%.

 However, when comparing true efficiency “from grid to chip,” DC power architecture is typically 8-12% more efficient, depending on the IT power supply. Granted there is no disagreement that other factors such as server loading and cooling have a more profound impact on data center efficiency than the power architecture but every improvement matters.

2) DC is more reliable than AC: Independently collected empirical data as well as laboratory tests give evidence that DC power systems increase reliability over comparable AC systems by a factor of up to 100.Flip that coin, and you could say that DC allows simplification of power systems architecture without jeopardizing availability.

3) DC is cheaper than AC: This angle of the debate has seen a fair amount of cheating but ABB says that, analysis shows that the true cost of a DC power system (including switchgear, UPS, cabling etc.) is at least 20 % lower than that of a comparable AC architecture.

However, as pointed out above, the biggest cost savings lies in the potential to simplify the architecture and achieve the same (or greater) savings with significantly less equipment.


Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication!

Speaking of simplicity, an indisputable advantage of DC is that it allows to connect multiple energy sources such as the utility grid and on-site generated power (e.g. from fuel cells, solar, wind etc.) onto a common bus without complicated controls and synchronization.

This, I agree totally, 100%. Sophistication should simplify things and not make it difficult.

Fire risk: GM recalls 43,500 hybrid cars in North America

Oh no. This is not a good news at all for hybrid vehicles big community.

In a rare incident, GM is recalling hybrid car models for issues related to 'potential overheating of the circuit board' that could lead to a loss of battery charge and cause the engine to stall. Models affected are:

• Chevrolet Malibu Eco 2013
• Buick LaCrosse 2012 - 2013
• Buick Regal sedan 2012 - 2013

Recalling is uncommon in vehicle industry, but let's hope this will not halt the progress and dim people's enthusiasm for energy-efficient cars.

BTW, this hybrid is powered by a combination of a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder gas engine and a 15-hp electric motor, is priced at $25,995 in the US. That's about RM77,036 in Malaysia in dollar-to-dollar conversion. I bet it will cost you no less than RM160,000 in our 'import-friendly' car market!

The Chevrolet Malibu Eco

As reported by the press:

General Motors is recalling nearly 43,000 hybrid vehicles in the United States and around 500 in Canada to fix a defect that could cause a fire in the trunk, the automaker said Monday.

The recall affects Chevrolet Malibu Eco models from the 2013 model year and Buick LaCrosse and Regal sedans from 2012 and 2013 which are equipped with eAssist hybrid gas-electric engines.

"The issue is the potential overheating of the circuit boards in the generator control module, but it does not involve the eAssist battery," GM said in a statement.

GM said an overheating circuit board could lead to a loss of battery charge and cause the engine to stall.

"In addition, there may be a burning or melting odor, smoke, and, in rare instances, a fire in the trunk," GM spokesman Alan Adler said in a statement.

Most of the incidents occurred within the first 1,000 miles of operation, GM said and only two led to trunk fires. One was during an October screening in a dealership and the other occurred in March.

No injuries or crashes were reported as a result of the defect, GM said.
