A 'Continent Showdown' between Germany and Argentina

Tonight (tomorrow morning), football fans from around the world will witness the unfolding of what seemed to be a nail-biting final match of this year’s World Cup: Germany versus Argentina.

I am an England supporter but with their World Cup campaign cut short, I am now rooting for Germany. But that's my preference, you are absolutely free to support your favourite team. So, let's watch likes of Messi and Muller play in few hour's time.

Meanwhile, here are some facts about both teams:

Germany vs Argentina

Their distinctive roads to the final:

Germany vs Argentina

May the best team win. I will update this page as soon as the final result is known tomorrow.

Update @5.50am Malaysia time:
Germany won the 2014 World Cup, beating Argentina 1 - 0 with substitute Mario Gotze scoring the winner during extra time (112th minute).

Well done Germany!

Champions League semi-final result: Bayern Munich vs Real Madrid

The first leg of this semi-final at Santiago Bernabeu ended 1 - 0 to the advantage of Real Madrid, with Karim Benzema scoring the solitary goal.

In this second leg, Bayern Munich play host to Real Madrid in the mouth watering encounter at Allianz Arena, Germany. Bayern Munich, who must beat Real Madrid if they are to reach the final, have never lost a home match against the Spanish side. But I'm hoping Real would get the result this time around!

Champions League semi-final result: Real Madrid vs Bayern Munich

The first semi-final match yesterday between Chelsea and Atletico Madrid ended with a goalless draw.

With Manchester United having been eliminated at quarter-final by Bayern Munich, my attention now would be on the clash between two of Europe's bests. No doubt Bayern played great football this season, but at this stage I'll rally my support for Real Madrid.

Playing at 2:45am Hong Kong time, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich meet at the Santiago Bernabeu in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-finals in what promises to be a pulsating tie.

Real Madrid ( 1 )  -  ( 0 ) Bayern Munich

Good bye Moyes, move on Manchester United

It's now official - David Moyes is sacked by Manchester United.

I could see it was coming for sometime now as rumours has been circulating - his days at Old Trafford was numbered. It's sad to see him go but I believe the timing is perfect - United has 4 more games to cool down before the end of a torrid season.

For the players, they could do themselves a bit of favour in earning some respect by winning the remaining games. The paying fans deserve it!

My collection: Been a United fan for some time now.

Was it right to give him the sack?

They did this a lot of time at other Premier League clubs but sacking a manager 10 months into a job is not the United way.

But while some may disagree, I will sit on the other side and say that sacking him was a no brainer.

Failing to qualify for the prestigious Champions League for the first time since 1995, losing in all 3 domestic competitions, failed miserably in his attempts to sign top players, and worse of all losing big to the club he previously managed. Losing to Everton means that someone is doing a better job than he did during his days at Goodison Park, and that he fared poorly at Old Trafford.

What this also mean is that the board was left with little option but to cut their losses.

Moyes's last game in charge was a 2-0 loss at his former club Everton, which confirmed that United would not compete in the Champions League next season. It was a pain watching that game; United moved the ball very slowly and when approaching the opponent penalty box, they lacked creativity. They were vulnerable to counter attacks and the defense was in disarray numerous times. It was sooo not United!

Start afresh

People say when you are at rock bottom there is only one way: Up!

Let's start afresh and bring back the glory to Old Trafford. This is one of the biggest clubs with great tradition and it takes some beating to write them of completely.

Alex Ferguson is a big gap to fill but there are many coaches out there who can do great jobs. GLORY GLORY MAN. UNITED!

TheGreenMechanics: Goodbye David Moyes. In Malaysia we say 'Selamat jalan Moyes'.

German power: Barcelona and Real Madrid out of UEFA Champions League

Let's take a break from studying and admiring Germany's success in green power. They are, of course the best in Renewable Energy.... but beyond that:

This is really a light (and glorious) moment:

Yesterday, Bayern Munich beat Barcelona by 4 goals to nil.
More pictures and story at The Telegraph
Ouch.. L.O.L

Today, another German club, Dortmund thrashed another team from Spain, Real Madrid by 4 - 1.

Ouch.. double L.O.L

Update:
Second legs were on May 1 and May 2, which saw Real Madrid beat Dortmund 2-0 but not enough as they were beaten on 4-3 aggregate.

Barcelona were well beaten with 0-3 scoreline at home and went out of the tournament with 7-0 aggregate in favour of Bayern Munich.

FINAL will be an all-German affair at Wembly between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund

Manchester United are Champions - won 20th Premier League Title

Manchester United are champions yet again!

Manchester United won their 20th title on Monday night (early morning Malaysian time) after beating Aston Villa 3-0, thanks to a Robin van Persie hattrick.

United won 20th title
Earlier on Sunday, Manchester City lost to a spirited performance by Spurs, meaning United's 16 point advantage is now unassailable.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
It was a joy to watch in anticipation.

The thing about United is that, every time they lose grip on the trophy to their rivals, they bounce back quickly in the next campaign.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

United won 20th title
If you missed the match, this is Robin van Persie's wonder goal against Aston Villa, one that is worthy of a goal of the season.

A stunning strike by the Dutchman - even if you are not a United fan, this is one that is worth watching.

Result: Manchester United vs Reading (1 - 0)

After a disastrous defeat of Manchester City at Everton earlier today, Manchester United can take a huge step towards winning their 20th trophy of the English Premier League by beating managerless Reading.

If they can overcome Reading they'll have 15 points cushion at the top of the table with 9 games remaining.

Old Trafford, 16th March 2013. City said United will make mistake; we'll see about that.

It's interesting to note that M.City are very confident that they will catch United up and beat them at the end of the season just as they did last year. That's according to City defender, Gael Clichy.

Last season: City trailing United by 8 points with 8 games to play
This season: City trailing United by 12 points with 10 games left

Mathematically, the situation is similar but United surely won't allow a repeat of their failure to hold on to a healthy lead this time around.

First half result: MU ( 1 ) - ( 0 ) Reading

21st minute goal by Rooney set United on course. What a lovely run by Ferdinand who then set Rooney to fire home from outside the box.

Full Time result: MU ( 1 ) - ( 0 ) Reading

In the end, solitary goal by Wayne Rooney proved to be the difference. Not a fluent performance by United but a win is a win and they go 15 points clear at the top of the Barclays Table.

Watch out, "noisy neighbours"!

FA Cup semi-final result: Manchester United vs Chelsea

After crashing out of the prestigious European Champions League at the hands of Real Madrid, Manchester United is facing another strenuous test today in the FA Cup against Chelsea.

Chicarito scored the first goal for United. Yes!!

Date    : 11-03-2013
Time   : 12.30am Malaysia time
Venue: Old Trafford

To make matter more interesting, Chelsea defender David Luis was quoted as saying "we would rub salt to United's wound", referring to United's exit of the European League.

First Half result: MU ( 2 ) - ( 0 ) Chelsea

Hernandez header went past both Cech and Cahill, brilliant work by the Mexican forward. Second goal was a Rooney free kick and Luis himself failed to deal with the pace of the ball. Rooney's free kick went straight into the back of the net.

Great stuff!

Full Time result: MU ( 2 ) - ( 2 ) Chelsea

Goals from Hazard and Ramires put Chelsea level. It is all square at Old Trafford. There will be playoff at Stamford Bridge to determine who go into the final.

Winners of the United/Chelsea tie will face Manchester City in the semi-final.

Goal-line tech at World Cup 2014

I've been waiting for this to happen.

People have been talking a lot about goal-line technology and I hope this will finally become reality during the FIFA World Cup 2014 in Brazil.

This is the disallowed Frank Lampard's goal against Germany during 2010 World Cup. The goal happened when England was trailing Germany by 2 goals to 1 and had it been allowed, the game approach would have been different as the momentum was all on England. Photo The Sun

What is goal-line technology

In football, goal-line technology is a method used to determine when the ball has completely crossed the goal line with the assistance of electronic devices or camera, or combination of both, and at the same time assisting the referee in calling a goal or not.

FIFA confirms goal-line technology at World Cup
Reuters, Feb 19.

ZURICH  - Goal-line technology will be used at the 2014 World Cup and two more systems could be considered in addition to the existing pair, soccer's world governing body FIFA said on Tuesday.

Two systems, Hawkeye and Goalref, have so far been licensed by FIFA and both were used at last year's World Club Cup in Japan, one in each of the two stadiums, where goal-line technology was employed for the first time.

FIFA said a third system, developed in Germany, had already passed examinations and that the providers were in licensing discussions. A fourth system, also German, has also been tested with the results due this week.

FIFA confirmed goal-line technology was "successful" at the World Club Cup, although there were no incidents where it had to be used.

It intends to install goal-line technology at all 12 venues at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

"After a successful implementation of goal-line technology (GLT) at the Club World Cup in Japan in December 2012, FIFA has decided to use GLT at the Confederations Cup Brazil 2013 and 2014 World Cup," FIFA said in a statement.

FIFA said Hawkeye and Goalref would have to join the selection process.

English Premier League - midweek results

All the big guns played on Wednesday evening (Thursday morning Malaysia time) except for Manchester City who were held to a 0 - 0 draw at Queen Park Rangers a day earlier.

Great chance for Manchester United to stretch their lead at the top to 7 points.

Rooney scored twice in the Manchester United's win against Southampton. BBC photo

Results of interest:

QPR vs Manchester City                    : 0 - 0
Manchester United vs Southampton  : 2 - 1
Arsenal vs Liverpool                           : 2 - 2
Reading vs Chelsea                           : 2 - 2

A nervy second half for United at Old Trafford but they held on to a 2 - 1 win and indeed it is a 7-point gap now with nearest contenders, City. Except  for United, all other top clubs dropped points this week.

All in all, a very good week for United after the stalemate at Spurs last week. A 4 - 1 win on Fulham in the FA cup earlier, followed by this win put smiles on the manager's face. And mine.

Way to go Rooney, and United!

2nd Leg result: Thailand vs Malaysia

Both team were tied at 1 -1 during the first leg clash in Bukit Jalil Stadium. They are fighting it out to earn a place in the final of the AFF Suzuki Cup 2012 against Singapore.

The game kicked-off at 8.00pm Malaysia time and this article will be updated at half-time and as soon as the final whistle is blown by the referee.

A goalless draw would be good enough for Thailand to advance into their 6th final in nine editions of the Asean Football Championship, but I believe they will be going for a win.

Half-time result:

Thailand ( 0 ) - ( 0 ) Malaysia

The first 45 minutes ends with a deadlock and Malaysia will have a mountain to climb in the second half due to the dismissal of Mohamed Fadhli Mohd Shas for a second yellow card. Although the second yellow was debatable but he should have been more careful as he was already in the referee's book. He has only himself to blame.

Full-time result:

Thailand ( 2 ) - ( 0 ) Malaysia

I personally think the two goals were due to lapses in the defense. Thailand will be in the final with Singapore who earlier qualified after beating Philippines 1 - 0,

Congratulations Thailand!

Result: Singapore vs Philippines

The game is currently on-going between Singapore Lions and the Philippines Azkals for a  second leg of the AFF Suzuki Cup semifinal. Kicked-off at 8.00pm

Both teams settled for a 0-0 draw at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in the opening leg of their Suzuki Cup semifinal. Neither team did enough to force a goal, and so who advances to the Finals will come down entirely to the ninety minutes, and perhaps extra-time and penalties. Cone on guys! Beautiful football please.

Update
Half time result:
Singapore (1) - Philippines (0)

The Azkals didn't particularly played bad, infact they had few good chances, but the Lions have the better share of possession and every time they move forward, they look dangerous.

FULL TIME RESULT:

Singapore ( 1 ) - ( 0 ) Philippines

Khairul Amri's 19th minute goal sent Singapore to the Final to face the winners of the Thailand/Malaysia tie to be played tomorrow. Congratulations Singapore!

Result: Malaysia vs Thailand

Suzuki Cup

AFF Suzuki Cup 2012: Semifinal, first leg at Bukit Jalil National Stadium, Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. Second leg will be played in Thailand.

At the time this was posted, team Harimau Malaya is already thick in action with The War Elephant. So, come on you guys!

Full time result:

Malaysia ( 1 ) - ( 1 ) Thailand

Note: A draw is not too bad a result for Malaysia but they should really have won it 2 - 1 when Safee Sali's point blank header on 87th minute was denied by the Thailand keeper. Tough luck.

No more stupid Europe errors: Sir Alex Ferguson

The UEFA Champions League draw was made yesterday (Thursday) in Monaco, and as usual many still think that the draw was fixed. What a cry baby. It was shown LIVE on TV and you can see the person mixing the balls around randomly before picking one of the them without being able to have a glance. So, just leave the probability law do the job, shall we.

Controversy aside, let's look at the draw results:

English teams Manchester United and Arsenal got pretty straight forward draws while it's a tricky one for depending champions, Chelsea with Juventus in the same group. High spending Manchester City is in the "group of death" together with Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Ajax.

Real Madrid will start their campaign on September  18, 2012

Manchester United and Barcelona to start their first matches on September 19, 2012

No more "stupid errors" for Manchester United

Sir Alex Ferguson has reportedly (ESPN) told his Manchester United players they cannot afford to make the "stupid errors" they committed in during the group stage of the prestigious UEFA Champions League last season.

With the relatively easy CL group, United should qualify for the knockout stages of the competition with ease. They just need to remind themselves of the poor home display last season to drive them to perform better this time around.

Come on! No more soft goals and lapses in defense. With the addition of another world class striker in Robin van Persie, United's arsenal should have more than enough armour and bullets.

GO UNITED!

Note: Manchester United's first game is against Galatasaray at Old Trafford on 19/09/2012.

Oscar Awards 2011 for Football cheats

The 84th edition of the annual Academy Awards just one week away, it is time to share the final projections or rather nominate probable candidates for best actors. I am a football fan though, so, my interest  and this entry would be skewed to football acts. If you follow the sport on a regular basis you'd roughly know who are these football Oscar front-runners.

It is not fun to watch football with some cheap cheats added in, especially if you are a strong supporter of a particular team and you feel the team's hard done by. Not fun at all. The act of diving should  not be permitted at all and be dealt with properly; take the following examples:
  • more frequent yellow-carding; make it mandatory
  • football clubs owners to act hard on such players - wage-cut, etc
  • shame them by showing their dark art to the paying spectators during pre-matches

Without further ado, let's meet the 2011 candidates:

Hamit Altintop
Euro qualification match with Croatia, November 2011. The midfielder latched on to a promising pass in the box, but after seeing the ball go loose took to the ground in utter desperation. It was so bad that none of his team-mates appealed and not even the opposition could be bothered to complain about his blatant act of cheating.

Not only did he fail to fool referee Felix Brych, but the slow motion replays made Altintop look silly for attempting such a stunt.

Diving Altintop. Credit: dailymail.co.uk

Dani Alves
During Champions League semifinal, April 27, 2011. The Barcelona defender acrobatically spun to ground, clutching his right calf muscle, after he and Real Madrid's Pepe went for a loose ball with raised legs. Like the Zapruder film of U.S. President John F. Kennedy's assassination, the slow-mo was scrutinized across the football world for clues: Did Pepe actually touch Alves? No way!

Alves and Pepe in action: Click to see the frame-by-frame post-mortem

Gervasio Nunez
Europa League group stage, Oct. 20, 2011. Pushed on the shoulder by Fulham's Mousa Dembele, the Argentine midfielder for Polish side Wisla Krakow pretended he had been thumped in the face and collapsed. Referee Martin Hansson bought it, Dembele trudged off, Wisla turned its one-man advantage into a 1-0 win. "Of course, we will never complain after a red card,'' said Fulham manager Martin Jol before going on to complain. "It was a push on the shoulder, after being kicked,'' he said. "You shouldn't raise your hand. He (Dembele) pushed him on the shoulder and you shouldn't do that. The referee gave us a red card, but we felt hard done by.''

Peter Wisgerhof
Johan Cruyff Shield, July 30, 2011. In this match between the Dutch Cup winners and Dutch league champions, the captain of FC Twente looked like a mountain goat skipping over a rock or a frog on takeoff as he jumped into the air and rolled onto the ground after a tickle of a tackle from Ajax defender Daley Blind. To his credit, Wisgerhof later laughed at himself. "The worst dive of the match was definitely mine,'' Dutch websites quoted him as saying. "I felt something, but fell much later. Why didn't I get a yellow card? I quickly told the ref I'm a defender and don't even know how to fall."

All of them are great candidates but The Associated Press' John Leicester says that Oscar Award should go to Bryan Carrasco. I totally agree with him.

OSCAR Award Recipient: Bryan Carrasco

South American Under-20 Championship, Feb. 12, 2011. Such ingenuity by Bryan Carrasco! The Chilean midfielder plumbed new depths by grabbing an opponent's arm and whacking himself in the face with it, and then collapsing. You'll not tire of the video, with hilarity from commentators Nicolas Nardini and Jorge Nazar

AND for Carrasco's ingenuity, here is the movie that shows why he deserve it:

It is a short 1-minute clip, so it's worth the wait. You are going to love this one!

United Move Clear

What a week of football for the BPL - to United fan that is!

Check out the other selected results from this week's fixtures (those that concerns the potential title contenders - M.United, M.City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspurs):

Week 5 BPL Result
All of the other teams in the "Big Five" dropped points except for United.

For my English speaking friends and readers, that sums up my excitement for a fantastic week for Manchester United FC and the fans from all over the world.

Untuk rakan-rakan peminat bolasepak di Malaysia, izinkan saya kelentong sikit a.k.a trip macam pengulas sukan terkemuka Haji Hasbullah Awang, hehe.

90 minit pertemuan United dengan Chelsea yang dijangka menyajikan persembahan menarik nampaknya akan diingati sebagai yang sebaliknya. Apa tidaknya, lihat saja fakta-fakta berikut:
  1. Rooney gagal menyempurnakan sepakan penalti
  2. Torres yang berdepan dengan gawang kosong memilih untuk menguis bola ke kiri (blunder of the season lah kiranya)

Come On UNITED.....all the way now!
